Sky Go - What is it?

Sky logo

Over 300 channels and a huge library of on demand content from Sky ( on your TV is great, but you know what’s even better? Getting to watch it from your computer, tablet, or smartphone.

What is Sky Go?

And that’s exactly what Sky Go lets you do. By logging onto the website, downloading the Desktop programme, or installing the app, you can view catch up and on demand TV or watch over 70 channels of live telly from anywhere in the UK and Ireland.

Whatever’s included in your Sky TV package, you’ll be able to access through the app - though the number of live channels on there is limited.

How can I get Sky Go?

It’s available to all Sky TV customers at no extra cost.

To get going, visit the Sky Go website, download Sky Go Desktop to your computer, or install the app. Then sign up or log in with a Sky iD, which you’ll then need to link to your Sky TV account. Once you’ve done that, boom, you’re in - time to watch as much TV as you want.

What devices are compatible with Sky Go?

Loads. You can get it on PCs, Macs, laptops, tablets, iPhones, Android devices (4.0 and above), games consoles (with Sky Go Extra), and even some Smart TVs and streaming sticks.

Sky Go Desktop isn’t currently compatible with Windows 8 or anything later than OS X Mountain Lion, but since you can access all your programmes via the Sky Go website, all you need is to fire up your web browser. However, that browser will need to have the free Microsoft Silverlight plug-in, which is no longer supported by Google Chrome - so try Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari instead.

You can register up to two devices at once - or four, if you have Sky Go Extra - which you can switch around and manage no more than once a month.

What’s Sky Go Extra?

Sky Go Extra gets you extra stuff for an extra cost - or for free, if you’ve got Sky Multiscreen.

It’s the premium version of Sky Go, and comes packed with additional features. The main selling point is that you can download the episodes of the TV shows you want, and watch them any time from anywhere - even if you’re offline or out of the country. But watch out: the file will delete itself 30 days after download, or 48 hours from when you first press play.

You can also register double the number of devices to watch on - four rather than two.

Extra works on a monthly rolling subscription, so you can cancel it or start it up again whenever you like. That's perfect if you’re going on holiday and want to download the latest Game of Thrones to watch on the plane. It's also the only way to get Sky Go on your Xbox, PS3, or PS4.

What’s good about Sky Go?

  • Watch all your favourite live, catch up, and on demand TV wherever you are
  • Includes over 70 live channels
  • Compatible with a wide range of devices, including iPhones, Androids, tablets, games consoles, PCs, Macs - basically anything with a web browser
  • Can download programmes to watch when and where you want to with Sky Go Extra
  • Free to Sky customers, and Sky Go Extra is included in Sky Multiscreen
  • Subscription available even if you’re not a customer

What’s bad about Sky Go?

  • Device compatibility is limited - not currently supported by latest version of OS X, Google Chrome, or Windows Phones
  • Can only register two devices (or four with Sky Go Extra), which can only be switched around once a month
  • Not all programmes are available for download, and there’s a limited window for watching them once they’re on your device
  • Only available to Sky TV customers
